A North Ranch Summer: Trails Before Breakfast, Concerts After Dinner

For a neighborhood built around a private country club and a 4,700-acre gated footprint, North Ranch spends a surprising amount of its best hours outside its own gates. The Saddle Pass trailhead sits behind a public playfield. The Saturday concert series is free and a short drive from any home on the golf course. The most-talked-about new restaurant in the ZIP code took over the address of the last one.

That is the shape of summer here in 2026. The country club is still the center of gravity for members, but the interesting weekend activity has spread out to the civic courtyard, the open-space trailheads, and a handful of independent kitchens that have replaced legacy tenants at The Shoppes at Westlake Village and The Landing at Westlake Lake. The trailhead your neighbors actually use

The North Ranch Open Space is maintained by the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency, and the main entry that most residents overlook is a small COSCA sign on Bowfield Street, just east of the North Ranch Playfield. That is the south end of the Saddle Pass Trail, which winds three to four miles of ridgeline north and south between Thousand Oaks Boulevard and the townhomes above Via Colinas. It is steep enough to be a workout, not steep enough to require poles.

For a gentler morning, the Wishbone Loop starts at the west end of the parking lot at Westlake Village Community Park, 31107 E. Thousand Oaks Boulevard, and drops you back where you left the car. There is also a lesser-known access point at Canyon Oaks Park, 6200 Hedgewall Drive, where a footbridge leads to a hill climb that most first-timers turn around on. All three connect into the same trail network, which links east into the Oak Park trails and north toward the Oakbrook system. The practical implication for anyone living inside the North Ranch gates: you can leave the driveway on foot and be on dirt within ten minutes, without ever putting the car on Westlake Boulevard.

The free concert calendar worth walking down to

The City of Westlake Village runs two parallel free summer series, and the 2026 lineup is more programmed than it has been in several years. TGIF Concerts in the Courtyard happen at City Hall, 31200 Oak Crest Drive, and Saturdays in the Park run at Berniece Bennett Park, 31800 Village Center Road. Food trucks open at 6:00 PM. Music starts at 7:00 PM. Bring your own chairs to the park; the courtyard has a limited supply on a first-come basis.

A few of the Friday shows have been relocated to Berniece Bennett Park this year because of construction at the City Hall courtyard, which is worth checking on the City of Westlake Village calendar before you leave the house. Separately, The Promenade at Westlake hosts live music near the fountain on Saturday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 PM, running from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. That is a different vibe: dinner and a drink at a restaurant with the music as background, rather than a picnic on the grass.

Where dinner used to be, and where it is now

The dining map inside a five-minute drive of the North Ranch gates has turned over more in the past year than in the previous five. The pattern is worth noticing, because it changes what a Friday night out looks like for someone who is not driving into Calabasas or Woodland Hills.

• 101 North Eatery & Bar at 30760 Russell Ranch Road, Suite D, closed. Osteria La Buca, the Italian concept with existing locations in the Melrose district and Sherman Oaks, opened in the same address at The Shoppes at Westlake Village. The kitchen sources from a private farm in West LA, and it is now taking OpenTable reservations for dinner and lunch.
• Zin Bistro Americana at The Landing at Westlake Lake reopened as Yār on the Lake, a Persian and Mediterranean concept. "Yār" is the Persian word for friend. Same waterfront patio, different menu.
• Novo Café at The Shoppes brought in Boule de Pain French Bakery Café to run its 7:00 AM breakfast and pastry service, which functions as a second morning option in a plaza that used to lean entirely on the sit-down restaurants.
• La Gita Kitchen and Focacceria is targeting a late-2026 grand opening at 4619 Lakeview Canyon Road in the County Line Shopping Center, taking over the former StretchCoast space. The co-owner is Kyle Lopez, who worked at Stonefire Grill from 2008 to 2020 and served as its COO. His mother and co-owner, Mary Harrigan, co-founded Stonefire Grill in 2000.
• El Sancho Loco Cantina and its sibling El Sanchito closed their North Ranch Shopping Plaza location after two and a half years.

The through-line is that the plazas closest to the neighborhood have shifted from national and regional chains toward independent operators, several of them second-generation or chef-led. If you have been defaulting to Cheesecake Factory or Paul Martin's out of habit, the field around you has changed.

A Saturday, if you have one open

Here is a version of the day that only works because these pieces are within a few miles of each other. Start with a 7:00 AM hike from the Bowfield Street trailhead, before the ridgeline gets hot. Come back, shower, and walk into Novo Café for a Boule de Pain croissant and coffee around 9:30. Drop the kids at North Ranch Playfield mid-morning; there are two softball fields, tennis, basketball, and a walking path around the perimeter, and roadside parking is easy.

Break for the middle of the day. If the summer heat is up, this is the window that makes air conditioning and a book feel earned. Around 5:30, drive down to The Landing and grab an early table on the water at Yār on the Lake. If it is a Saturday in June or July, you have time to eat and get to Berniece Bennett Park by 7:00 for whichever tribute act is on that night. Bring folding chairs. Blanket space fills up early for the Petty and Nicks show on July 25, which was one of the more-anticipated dates on the schedule.

Why the shape of the summer matters

For most of the last decade, a description of North Ranch could stop at "gated community, country club, top-rated schools, luxury homes." All of that is still true. What the 2026 summer calendar reveals is a second layer of daily life that does not depend on club membership or on driving to Malibu or Calabasas. It runs on public trails maintained by COSCA, a free civic music series, and a small collection of independently owned restaurants that have replaced the corporate tenants that used to fill the same addresses.

That matters practically because it changes what "walking distance" and "short drive" mean around here. The trailheads are at the edge of the neighborhood. The Saturday concerts are less than two miles from the North Ranch Center at 1400 N. Westlake Boulevard. Osteria La Buca and Boule de Pain are in the same plaza. Yār on the Lake is on the lake. A resident who never joined the country club can put together a summer weekend inside a three-mile radius of home. That was not really true five years ago.
